Kilkern doubles up on motorway drainage maintenance at flood-prone locations
1st Jul 2025
Kilkern has scored a dual success with its appointment to drainage maintenance and upgrade programmes on the M57 and the M60.
Working to primary contractor M Group, Kilkern has carried out works between Junctions 1 and 2 of the M57 near Huyton, Liverpool and on a stretch of the M60 adjacent to Didsbury golf course, Manchester between Junctions 3 and 5. Both locations are vulnerable to flooding and the maintenance and upgrades will provide important alleviation.
On the M57, Kilkern cleared 6km of overburden from the existing drain, installed 350m of new filter pipe alongside 70 new gullies and more than 120 gully surrounds, and completed an anticipated 40 dig-down drain replacements. At the same time, 455m of filter drain are being replaced and 750m of drain overburden removed at the M60 works.
Extending relationship with M Group
Patrick Curran, Kilkern Director, is pleased to be extending the relationship with M Group.
“We were really pleased to receive the go-ahead on these two jobs,” he said. “We have just completed a similar project with M Group on the M62 so it is a real vote of confidence for us and for the quality of our delivery.
“Both of these new projects are important to tackle sections of motorway which, over the years, have become increasingly likely to flood. With the weather generally getting wetter, it is important that measures to improve the roads’ drainage are taken now.
“We are looking forward to working again with M Group and to delivering successfully another two projects which will bring relief to thousands of motorists in the Northwest.”
