Paving the way for North West sea defences scheme

26th Jan 2023

Kilkern Civil Engineering is playing an important part in building vital sea defences at Thornton Cleveleys in Lancashire.

The team has been brought in by principal contractor Balfour Beatty to lead off works at the 4-year long, £40M scheme for Wyre Council with the construction of the site compound. The project has been awarded under the national SCAPE framework.

Kilkern is also creating storage areas to house the rock armour that is being installed on the beach.

The pictures show how, to transport the rock armour from the storage area, the team is installing reinforced concrete roadways and widening the beach access ramp to facilitate access for large articulated dump trucks.

Kilkern’s Project Manager Sean Phillips explained that the dumpers will eventually handle and transfer the large three to seven tonne rocks to the beach that form the backbone of the sea defences.

“There are more than 11 kilometres of sea wall constantly being battered by nature so it requires some robust construction,” he said.

Patrick Rodgers Commercial Manager said ‘We are pleased to be working alongside Balfour Beatty to ensure Lancashire’s sea frontage is fit to face the future and we look forward to working with them on future projects.”
