Impressive new car park upgrade for University of Salford completes
12th Mar 2026
The development of a new modular car park at the University of Salford has been completed greatly relieving parking pressure for students and staff.
Kilkern carried out the civil engineering works required to prepare the site for the installation of principal contractor Octavius’s innovative modular car park system. The solution is designed to be installed directly onto an existing surface while allowing flexibility for future expansion.
The project involved a comprehensive scope of works to prepare the existing car park for the new structure. Kilkern removed the existing surface, carried out a reduced level dig and installed approximately 4,000m³ of 6C material and liner to form an attenuation and piling mat.
A total of 93 pile caps were constructed, using around 350m³ of concrete. Kilkern also delivered the site’s drainage infrastructure and completed the surfacing works using a combination of permeable tarmac and permeable block paving to support the metal-decked car park structure.
The completed facility provides more than 400 additional parking spaces, helping to ease demand for parking for staff and the university’s more than 26,000 students.
“This is an important project for the University of Salford and a showcase for Octavius Infrastructure’s modular car park solution,” said Patrick Curran, Director, Kilkern. “It also demonstrates Kilkern’s ability to deliver high-quality drainage and surfacing works safely, efficiently and on programme. We are proud to have played our part in its successful delivery.”

In addition, Kilkern completed all associated drainage works and surfaced the metal-decked car park using a combination of permeable tarmac and permeable block paving, contributing to the project’s sustainable drainage strategy.

“This is an important project for the University of Salford and a showcase for Octavius’s ground-breaking modular solution. It also demonstrates Kilkern’s ability to deliver high-quality drainage and surfacing works on time and to budget. We are proud to have played our part in its successful delivery.”
“The project is a great example of collaborative working between contractor and specialist supply chain.”
