Kilkern completes highways infrastructure works on A1 Wentbridge Viaduct scheme
3rd Feb 2026
Kilkern has completed its works on the A1 Wentbridge Viaduct improvement scheme, delivered for main contractor Octavius Infrastructure on behalf of National Highways.
The civil engineering and highways infrastructure package included removing and replacing the existing reinforced concrete central reserve and verges and installing new kerbs and associated infrastructure.

After works started in April 2023, the programme was extended to accommodate necessary design changes, during which the Kilkern team was demobilised before returning to complete its works.

Opened in 1961, the Grade II listed Wentbridge Viaduct carries the A1 over the River Went and is recognised internationally for its pioneering concrete design. The structure featured in the Twentieth Century Engineering Exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and remains a key route for motorists travelling through West Yorkshire.
Historic structure
Patrick Curran, Director at Kilkern, said: “We’re proud to have contributed to the maintenance of such a significant and historic structure.
“The Wentbridge Viaduct is something of an emblem for British engineering and a vital connection on the A1. We are pleased to have again been able to work closely with Octavius to deliver an excellent result – relieving congestion for motorists and safeguarding the future of an important example of British civil engineering.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Octavius on future highways schemes.”

The completion of Kilkern’s works marks another milestone in the £30 million programme of essential repairs and maintenance at Wentbridge Viaduct, helping to improve safety and reliability for road users while preserving one of the UK’s most distinctive bridges.
